The Orphans of Sainte Cécile The story behind the story

Picture
In 2008 I left France to live on the other side of the Channel. Things are far from being easy when you have to start your life in a foreign country when you are almost 40, so, between job interviews, jobs found and jobs lost I started making dolls; small ones, big ones, cloth dolls, sculpted dolls, the possibilities were endless and little by little a story came with each doll. In order to keep track of my ideas and also to share them, I created a blog, Papillon Bleu UK. People behind their screens started communicating, following, and a wonderful community of bloggers became my rock.

In November 2010 I joined an international doll artist group called Much ADO about Art Dolls. I made a doll for a challenge: Copy the Masters. The doll was inspired by a painting by Evelyn Santiago ‘Broken’. It didn’t take long before I started imagining the doll was an orphan. I thought she needed company and made her six more little friends. With them was born a story that I chose to write in both the languages I love, French and English.

I hope children and adults will enjoy reading this story of seven little orphans during the second World War who will have to move from France to England. Marie is the narrative voice as she is writing in her journal .She also loves to take photos of her friends.

Both texts, in English and French, are on the same page. You can have fun comparing both languages if you wish. I have left no specific guidance, no grammatical explanation nor vocabulary translation. Just read the story, then explore what you want and you will see, there is a lot to discover if you are nosy…
